The Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust Donates $10,000 to The Ecology School
Saco, Maine (December 27, 2018) — The Ecology School received a generous gift of $10,000 from The Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust to support the design and implementation of permaculture gardens throughout the school’s new environmental education center at River Bend Farm. Permaculture is a way to grow food by using ideas and methods learned through natural ecosystem study. The Ecology School will employ these concepts at River Bend Farm to ensure minimal ecological impact while creating the community benefits of local food production. These permaculture gardens will educate and inspire program participants; produce nuts, fruit, and vegetables for human consumption; restore meadows and woodlands; create habitat and food for wildlife, birds, and beneficial insects; provide protection against erosion from stormwater runoff and create rich wetland soil for rain gardens.

In 2017 The Ecology School purchased River Bend Farm, a 105-acre historic farm located on a scenic bend in the Saco River in Saco, Maine. This property is the future home of the school’s model sustainable residential environmental learning center and progressive agroecology farm.
