Maine Mycological Association Hosts Foray At River Bend Farm

On Sunday, August 26, 30 people gathered at River Bend Farm to participate in the Maine Mycological Association's (MMA) foray. The purpose of a foray is for an organized group to go into the forest and look for fungi, collecting and identifying as many species as possible. The MMA hosts forays throughout Summer and Fall in different locations around Maine, collecting specimens and recording the species found. The Saco group found 51 species of mushrooms including the bioluminescent Jack-O-Lantern mushroom; the poisonous Death Angel mushroom which causes kidney failure in 3-5 days; and an assortment of edible species including Chanterelles, Black Trumpets, and Oysters. The full list of species identified can be found on the group's website: mainelymushrooms.org.
