The Ecology School, a non-profit environmental education program in southern Maine, is transitioning to a new home at River Bend Farm, a historic 105-acre farm on the Saco River. The project will be built to the specifications of The Living Building Challenge, a green building certification program and sustainable design framework. The Living Building Challenge is also considered the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard for buildings, taking into account the impact buildings have on the environment and the health of the community. At The Ecology School, the focus is in the relationships that all living organisms have with one another and with the shared environment. Come learn more about the sustainable features of River Bend Farm and how they plan to use these features as tools for learning. 718 solar panels will be placed over the south facing field and throughout the orchards. These panels will produce 330,000 kwH per year, which is equivalent to removing 49.5 cars from the road each year, 257,000 pounds of coal burned, or 29,700,000 smart phones charged.
